Acclaimed Artist Teaches Aboriginal Wisdom
LARAMIE, Wyo. (5/31/2022) – Acclaimed Australian performing artist and Laramie resident Paul Taylor spent a week with Harmony and Centennial students and staff. Taylor celebrated the culture of his homeland through story, song, dance, painting, and didjeridoo. Each afternoon at the Harmony school, the students were taught the Aboriginal wisdom concept of "Caring for Country," focusing on a positive relationship with water. Together, they created a large mural currently displayed at the school.
Students and staff worked together with Taylor to create the Laramie River Valley Rainbow Mural. The painting depicted the land associated with the Laramie River watershed in an Aboriginal topo map dot style. Besides working on the mural and learning about the land, students spent many delight-filled hours crafting, painting, playing, and investigating the culture of the Aboriginal didgeridoo, the Bullroar, and Boomerangs. Barbara Farley, Principal of both Harmony and Centennial schools, was exuberant in her gratitude for Taylor and his work,
"It is always wonderful to have people with Paul's talent share their knowledge and enthusiasm with our community."
Participants enjoyed creating, dancing, singing, and ending the week with a performance celebration for family and friends.
Taylor's skill in teaching about Laramie's water sources is also evident in his three mural displays at Laramie High School. His work is based on geological facts provided in large measure by Geologist Chris Moody. For more information on these murals and Paul Taylor's life work, visit www.PaulTaylor.ws.
